Build Unity

It’s the question everyone wants the answer to: How do you create unity in such a diverse, and sometimes divisive, community or workplace? It’s essential for thriving businesses, communities, nonprofits or any initiative, as it forms the foundation for collective success.

Unity starts with listening to and valuing opinions at all levels, creating mutually shared goals. Ensuring that everyone feels valued, that their work is meaningful and that they play a role in achieving success is crucial.

Believe in the Vision

If you don’t believe in it, who else is going to? Maintaining a positive outlook and energy throughout a challenge largely determines the success you experience. A leader’s attitude can inspire optimism and perseverance in others. Or it can breed doubt, resentment, and tension. From start to finish of a project, it’s up to the leader to set the tone, ensuring consistent effort and commitment.

An Interview with W. Jeff Williams

People talk about unity a lot. Why is this important for leaders?
It is important for leaders to build unity because every person at every level needs to feel that they matter, that their work has meaning and that they play a part in the overall success of an organization.
To turn a vision into an actionable plan you must include people in the process. The beautiful thing about bringing people together to build a plan is that they become ambassadors for your shared vision.
Good leaders help create a sense of place — of connection. If people feel connected, they are more likely to take ownership of the organization. They will care for its well-being and help grow the characteristics of a healthy home.
